Have you ever wondered how makeup was all started and how it got changed with time? If yes, stop wondering and read this post to know about the evolution of makeup from ancient India to modern India.

In ancient days both women as well as men used makeup to enhance their beauty. You might have seen in older movies or plays. The most widely used makeup items were kajal and lipstick but it eventually developed with time and now we have our very own wide range of makeup stuffs.

1. Kajal/ Eyeliner

People used kajal on a daily basis on their waterline, outer rims of eyes and also on eyelashes. This enhanced the beauty of their eyes. They prepared this kajal with no lead components. They used muslin rags dipped in a paste of sandalwood then dried and burnt in a lamp of castor oil. Ghee is mixed to this and then used as kajal.

Makeup started with simple eyes. They used kohl and create smudged effect.

Change is the only permanent thing in this world and people started to change their looks with time.
People started to apply eyeliner in their upper lash line for more definition. Then came the liquid liners and people started to experiment with it and created winged eyeliner look.

Then they took it to the next level by creating cat eye look which is said to be one of the popular eye looks of all the time. Then people shifted to natural kind of look and came the brown liner.
Again the experimentation took a turn and bold makeup made a statement with dramatic graphic eyeliners. These makeup trends kept on changing with time and then white eyeliner made its entry. It was precisely used on the waterline to open up the eyes.

Then in the recent years came the trend of no-makeup makeup look and the artists went light handed.

2. Cosmetic oils

It is believed that cosmetology originated from Egypt and India and their records were back to 1550 B.C, to the Indus valley civilization. The ingredients used differ from season to season. For facial beautification, cosmetic tailams (oils) and clarified butter or ghee were used.
With evolution of cosmetic products, people started to shift towards makeup.

3. Eyebrows

People learnt that the main attractions of face are those eyebrows and started to shape them. Their shapes varied from time to time. People had bushy eyebrows and they started to pluck them and thin eyebrows became the trend during those time. They preferred thin penciled eyebrows.

Then came the trend of high arched thin brows. People used pencils and drew arch to get those perfect shape. These trends kept on changing and they started to like natural shaped one. They liked bushier natural ones. With time being, they used short strokes and filled those brows to make them look more fuller.

Tweezers came in and people made use of them to get natural shaped ones. With developments, brushes and gels were introduced for filling brows.
Then came the trend of eyebrow waxing and people went back to thin arched brows like in 1990s. Now came the recent trend of eyebrow bleaching with full bushy brows.

4. Blush

The ancient Egyptians were the first incorporate blush in their beauty rituals. It took time for Indians to use this. They first used crushed beets for blush for those pinky cheeks.
In the early stages, reddish pink rouge were used and applied in large circles over the cheeks. Rouge is a red powder or cream used as a cosmetic product. Then people started to apply it in triangular shapes which brought natural contour.

Then people started to use blush sparingly and blended it high. People slowly shifted to soft pinks and coral blushes and used it over those cheek bones. Then blending to the hair line came into trend and soft shade blushes were used even on chin regions for natural glow.

20 th century brought in the trends of blush contouring which gave well-structured face. Then people again went back to the natural simple cheek look. Then with the entry of contour and bronzer, blushes were used only on cheeks.

In the recent decade, glittery blush came into existence which was used along with bronzers. Today, blushes are available in various forms like powders, creams, gels, mousses and in a variety of colors.

In the ancient times, Indians were obsessed with fair skin tone which they considered as hallmark of beauty. They used natural skin bleaching agents like costus root, sesame seeds, lebbeck leaves, etc. They also used powdered lentils with honey for attaining fair skin tone. Then people started to use makeup. Back in the time, they preferred heavy makeup looks. With development of movies, it became a trend to wear makeup and they used bold heavy makeup to show through the black and white effects.

Then they preferred glowing natural kind of base looks. Fresher looking aesthetic became the trend then. People started to prefer good looking skin than fair looking skin. Then came the decades of experimentation when makeup trends took a turn.

Matte base makeup came and took over the trend. Then with vast developments came in prosthetic makeup. People now prefer well contoured and highlighted glowing base makeup and these trends keep changing with time to time.

In the recent decades, warm matte eyes were in trend paired up with thick eyeliners. They became a part of the natural toned makeup.
With the start of 21 st century, people moved towards silver eye shadow since shimmer became the trend due to which people included shimmer in makeup by using highlighters.

The recent trend was with smokey eyes and with social media development, Instagram eye looks got popular using vibrant colors forming various looks.

Crushed beets were widely used as a natural lip tint in the early days. Then rouge was applied to enhance the lips. The cupid’s bow was emphasized more with deep berry or crimson shades.
Then for cinema, people used golden or even gloss to enhance the lips in black and white screen. Then slowly people turned towards blushes and pinks for lips. With time, it even got faded to peaches to make the eyes stand out more.

Silicone fillers were introduced and people tried it for getting more fuller lips. That was the time when bright glossy lips were in trend. Then reds came back to trend again along with the trend of metallic lips.

Then in 80’s, neon shades were popularized but went off trend soon. In 90’s came the brown lipstick, which took over all the trend of the time and still stays popular among people.

In the recent times, people moved towards two toned or ombre shade lipsticks which also makes the lips look more fuller. Nude shade lips are preferred more to pair it up with the smokey eye trend. The very recent trends include glossy glitters on lips and purple lips.
